Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week

This is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, and the Stratford Fire Department encourages you to take steps to protect yourself from the “silent killer.”

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that can be deadly if undetected. It is produced when fuels do not burn completely in sources like gas furnaces, fireplaces, water heaters, generators and fuel-burning stoves.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, drowsiness or loss of consciousness.

Here’s what you can do to protect yourself:
  • Get an annual inspection of all fuel-burning appliances in your home
  • Check that outside furnace vents are not blocked
  • Never use a portable fuel-burning appliance or device in an enclosed space
  • Install a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm adjacent to each sleeping area
  • Regularly test your carbon monoxide alarms, and replace as required (typically every 7-10 years)
