Each year household hazardous waste is diverted from the landfill.  Household hazardous waste, which is usually labelled as corrosive, explosive, poisonous or flammable, must not be put in the garbage or down drains or storm sewers.

Upcoming Collection Days

Here are the dates for the Household Hazardous Waste Collections scheduled for 2025:

Saturday, May 31: 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 13: 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

(tentative) Saturday, Oct. 25: 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

All collections will take place at the Romeo Street landfill site (777 Romeo Street South).

Please note that materials will NOT be collected at the Rotary Complex parking lot.

Starting at 9 a.m., vehicles waiting to drop off hazardous waste materials will enter the landfill site and then immediately turn right at the gravel road that runs around the perimeter of the site. The collection depot is toward the east end of the landfill, and signs will be in place to direct traffic.

After dropping off materials, vehicles will continue along the gravel road and then turn right onto Lorne Avenue to exit the landfill site.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • The landfill site opens at 8 a.m. Saturday for regular waste dropoff, but hazardous waste can not and will not be accepted until 9 a.m. (this is a condition of our certificate of compliance with the Ministry of Environment)
  • As there is a longer collection time compared to previous years, consider delaying your trip until later in the afternoon, when the landfill site will likely be less busy
  • Regular waste drop-off hours at the landfill remain the same: 8 a.m-noon. Those who arrive after noon will only have access to the household hazardous waste drop-off.
  • For your own safety, please do not exit your vehicle while waiting to drop off your materials.

The City of Stratford currently has agreements with the Townships of Perth South and Perth East to allow their residents to bring their household hazardous waste to the City's dropoff location on the designated collection dates.

Accepted materials:

  • Paints, varnish, solvents, caulking, glue
  • Fuels, antifreeze, brake fluid
  • Used motor oil and filters
  • Batteries (household, rechargeable, automotive)
  • Household cleaners (i.e. bleach, oven cleaners)
  • Fluorescent tubes/compact fluorescent bulbs
  • Refillable and non-refillable propane tanks

Please remember that no PCBs, commercial, infectious or radioactive wastes will be accepted.
Household tips to safely dispose of hazardous waste around the house:

  • Go through your kitchen cabinets, basement and garage. Remove all unwanted pesticides, cleaners, full or partial aerosols, oils, batteries, paints, compact florescent bulbs and tubes, solvents and other household chemicals.
  • Make sure these products are tightly sealed and in their original containers. NEVER mix any of these materials together.
  • Place them in the trunk of your vehicle and drive to the designated household hazardous waste collection site.
  • At the site, there will be trained professionals who will receive, package, transport and store the materials safely and in compliance with all regulations.

Battery Recycling

Batteries are also accepted outside of Household Hazardous Waste Events. Bring your batteries to be recycled at the following locations during their hours of operation:

  • City Hall  - 1 Wellington Street
  • City Hall Annex - 82 Erie Street
  • Landfill Site - 777 Romeo Street
  • Public Library - 19 St. Andrew Street
  • Public Works Yard - 303 King Street
  • Fire Hall #1 - 388 Erie Street
